Young Child Cured of Dientamoeba fragilis (UPDATED)
Date: 5/16/2012 8:48:49 PM ( 12 y ) ... viewed 3447 times Recently, test results (3-day parasitology stool test) for my young son revealed he is finally also free of parasites!
I am so relieved. I suspected he was better, as his energy was much higher, he wasn't so vague, or teary.
His successful treatment - over 10 days - doses based on 20 kg child:
-Furazolidone 30 mg cap. (30 tablets)
-Nitazoxanide 150 mg cap. (20 tablets)
-Secnidazole 120 mg cap. (30 tablets)
The poor boy had to have the capsules broken and the powder mixed with honey. The medicines could not be sent in the post in the form of syrup. He absolutely hated the taste.
He and I are both absolutely over the moon that we are both now better. Luckily he did not develop any of the dietary issues I did through longer term parasite infection.
Luckily he loves Kefir - he has a glass a day with a little vanilla essence in it. I am working to replace the good gut flora in him.
FURTHER INFORMATION - ADVICE ON TREATMENT
If you read my initial post, you can see that it appears relatively easy to cause resistance in these parasites through using the wrong antibiotics or not enough for long enough.
On deciding to treat my son with the combination treatment from the Centre for Digestive Diseases in Sydney, I based the decision on my own situation whereby multiple treatments with the wrong drugs or not enough combinations of drugs, for limited times caused resistance.
I could not be certain whether he had got the parasites from me and at what point, so did not know whether he had a resistant version or non-resistant version. Hence I decided to get the GP to request their strongest treatment. Luckily my son must have had a not-so-resistant infection and thank God he was cured.
I would recommend a strong multi-drug approach for a minimum of 10 days. I recommend you email the CDD with full itemised list of treatments you have tried to date and ask what they recommend in this instance. Perhaps you could get your doctor to send the email.
By the way, Flagyl has been shown to be ineffective against these parasites, the research on metrozonidole I think it is actally called, is at least 20 years old and the parasites have long since developed resistance to that particular drug.
Treatment with Nitazoxanide is good but should be for at a minimum of 10 days in combination with other drugs as it is not enough on its own. I have read that other people have had success with this one drug if they have used a 30 day course, however if you have already used this one you are likely to have resistance there. Combination treatments seem to be the way to go these days.
