Thank you for all the details on your experience. Sorry about late reply. I have not been checking the blog for a while. Regarding your specific questions:
Did you feel the intra-colonic infusion of antibiotics was more effective that the orally induced antibiotics?
Yes, because I stepped through each of the CDD's oral treatment protocols and each time afterwards had 3-day parasitology stool testing through Histopath, coming back positive. The infusion was their last line salvage treatment for multi-drug resistant cases. That finally came back negative and I was then on the road to health.
On your post-infective irritable bowel syndrome, did you feel that the low FODMAP diet was in any way effective?
Yes, until about 6-12 months after the treatment and my system had normalised somewhat. I can now eat and drink most things but some foods can still cause problems. I will probably always have to be a bit careful with diet now.
Are alternative therapies in any way useful?
Gut focussed hypnotherapy can help with emotional support. You can feel so alone with this condition.
Understanding appears to be improving but knowledge really needs to filter down to the General Practitioner level where understanding is weak. But their doesn't appear to be that much research into these parasites going on, with the Centre for Digestive Diseases apparently the only place in Australia.
I think parasites for GPs fall into the too-hard basket. Also for specialists. I think they underestimate their potential to cause health issues in susceptible people. Also I found that often the older members of the medical profession cannot or do not keep up on new developments in this field. They only keep up with the science in their direct fields of interest. Also they prescribe medications that the parasites are already resistant to.
I encountered this regularly with medical professsionals. The onus is really on the patient to be well read and informed so you can 'educate' the GP/specialist (without getting their backs up). Be prepared with relevant scientific literature and know your stuff. In the end I just used them as a service to get appropriate referrals. It is a vastly neglected area of medical science. The CDD is at the forefront of this research in Australia. Add This Message To Your CureZone Favorites!
