Envy or Hasad - The envious or evil eye
Nothing destroys ones good deeds faster than the look of an evil eye or a jealous look.
Date: 2/24/2009 12:09:32 PM ( 15 y ) ... viewed 2599 times I am posting this here because I think it is such an important topic. For many of us have bad luck in this life and it is due purely to the envious eyes of others or from ourself. I hope this will help many of those who think that such a thing does not exist.

PREAMBLE
Q 3:102
O ye who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.
O mankind! reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, His mate, and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women;- reverence Allah, through whom ye demand your mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (That bore you): for Allah ever watches over you.
O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and (always) say a word directed to the Right:
That He may make your conduct whole and sound and forgive you your sins: He that obeys Allah and His Messenger, has already attained the highest achievement.
Verily, the best speech is Allah’s speech; the best guidance is Muhammad’s (saw) guidance: and the worst matters (in creed or worship) are those innovated (by the people), for every innovated matter is bid’ah ( prohibited innovation), and every bid’ah is an act of misguidance that(whoever initiated it) will reside in the Fire
MEANING OF ENVY
* A person hates to see anyone else being superior or better than him-Ibn Rajab
* Disliking a bounty that another has received and wishing that the other person would loose that bounty-Ibn Qayyim.
* A person wishing that another person’s bounty would be lost and wishing that he would get it himself- Haitham
* The one who is envious, hating the favours bestowed by Allaah upon someone else is an oppressor, going beyond bounds due to this- Ibn Taymiyyah
* As for the one who dislikes that someone else be blessed and wishes to be blessed in the same way, then this is forbidden for him except in that which will bring him closer to Allaah. Ibn Taymiyyah
EXAMINING THE SOUL
i. Nature: Imbued with knowledge of good and evil
But He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him something of His spirit. And He gave you (the faculties of) hearing and sight and feeling (and understanding): little thanks do ye give!
ii. Battle ground between good and evil
We have indeed created man in the best of moulds,
Then do We abase him (to be) the lowest of the low,-
iii. The soul is the sole instrument of paradise/hell
iv. The soul needs purification.
The believers must (eventually) win through,-
Those who humble themselves in their prayers;
Who avoid vain talk;
Who are active in deeds of charity;
Who abstain from sex,
Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,
But those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors;-
Those who faithfully observe their trusts and their covenants;
And who (strictly) guard their prayers;-
These will be the heirs,
Who will inherit Paradise: they will dwell therein (for ever).
(To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!
"Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him!
"Enter thou, then, among My devotees!
"Yea, enter thou My Heaven!
* Diseases of the Soul
o Pride
o Arrogance
o Show off
o Envy
o Anger
o Love of flattery
o Stinginess and miserliness
o False hope
EVILS OF ENVY
* It is a serious disease of the heart or soul
* It is an illness that afflicts the generality of mankind and only a few are secure from it. This is why it is said: “The body is never free from envy, but debasement brings it out, and nobility hides it.”
* Envy is a nasty disease of the heart that leads to bad conduct and
behavior, all of which are sins and evils.
* Envy leads to animosity,
* evil thinking about others' intentions,
* backbiting, spreading rumors, lying,
* turning back on each other's, parting with bad terms,
* It may also lead the envious person to inflict physical damage with the envied person and even murder
* It is a bad seed for a terrible tree of diseases
* Scholars consider it from among the most dangerous, destructive, inner diseases, and the most destructive for deen and worldly life. The Islamic ruling of envy is haram (prohibited);
* For this reason, the messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) forbade us in the authentic hadeeth that is reported by Imams Bukhari and Muslim, "Do not envy one another and do not hate one another, and do not turn your back on one another (in discontent) and be the servants of Allah like brothers."
* Allah (S.W.T.) also ordered his prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and all the believers to seek refuge from the evil of the envious person and envy, so He says in surat Al-Falaq, "Say: ‘I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the day-break," and at the end of the surah He then says, "And from the evil of the envier when he envies."
* It was the first sin to be committed on the surface of the earth by Satan.
* It was one of the main things that drove Satan away from his Lord (pride and envy).
* Satan was envious of the special blessings that Allaah gave Adam (AS).Allaah endowed Adam knowledge which Satan did not possess.Angels were ordered to prostrate for him
* Satan felt he was better than Adam (AS).
(Allah) said: "What prevented thee from prostrating when I commanded thee?" He said: "I am better than he: Thou didst create me from fire, and him from clay."
* The devil also introduced to mankind the crime of racism/nationalism
* Envy is a trait of people that Allaah has despised
Quite a number of the People of the Book wish they could Turn you (people) back to infidelity after ye have believed, from selfish envy, after the Truth hath become Manifest unto them: But forgive and overlook, Till Allah accomplish His purpose; for Allah Hath power over all things.
* When envy spreads among people, it is very destructive
* It destroys love and compassion that believers should have towards one another.
Hadeeth:
“Creeping upon is the disease of the people before you: Envy and hatred. And the hatred is the thing that shaves. I do not say it shaves hair, but it shaves religion(deen). By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will not enter paradise until you believe. And you do not believe until you love one another. Certainly, let me inform you of that which will establish such for you: spreading the greetings of peace (tasleem) among yourselves”. (Ahmad, Tirmidhi and it is Hasan).
* Envy is followed by hatred
* Hatred is a major destruction of the deen among Muslims today
* It leads to the break up of Muslim community
* Some people are envied due to their knowledge, others refuse to cooperate with him on Islamic affairs.
* A person may be made the leader or Imaam, others plot to bring him down.
* He/She may spend money in the path of Islaam, he is envied so as to cast aspersion on his personality.
* Envy destroys blood relationship as represented in the case of Abel and Cain (two children of Adam (AS).
Q. 5: 27-30:
Recite to them the truth of the story of the two sons of Adam. Behold! they each presented a sacrifice (to Allah): It was accepted from one, but not from the other. Said the latter: "Be sure I will slay thee." "Surely," said the former, "Allah doth accept of the sacrifice of those who are righteous.
"If thou dost stretch thy hand against me, to slay me, it is not for me to stretch my hand against thee to slay thee: for I do fear Allah, the cherisher of the worlds.
"For me, I intend to let thee draw on thyself my sin as well as thine, for thou wilt be among the companions of the fire, and that is the reward of those who do wrong."
The (selfish) soul of the other led him to the murder of his brother: he murdered him, and became (himself) one of the lost ones.
* The ordeal of Yusuf from his brothers was also due to envy
They said: "Truly Joseph and his brother are loved more by our father than we: But we are a goodly body! really our father is obviously wandering (in his mind)!
"Slay ye Joseph or cast him out to some (unknown) land, that so the favour of your father may be given to you alone: (there will be time enough) for you to be righteous after that!"
Said one of them: "Slay not Joseph, but if ye must do something, throw him down to the bottom of the well: he will be picked up by some caravan of travellers."
ix. Envy is a sign that one’s soul is evil and lacks iman. Q 91:8-10
And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;-
Truly he succeeds that purifies it,
And he fails that corrupts it!
* “Death is a certain event but human being treats it as if it is doubtful”-Hassan al-Basri.
* Envy is a sign of one discontent and unhappiness with the decree of Allaah. Q. 4: 32: وَلا تَتَمَنَّوْا مَا فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ بِهِ بَعْضَكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ لِلرِّجَالِ نَصِيبٌ مِمَّا اكْتَسَبُوا وَلِلنِّسَاءِ نَصِيبٌ مِمَّا اكْتَسَبْنَ وَاسْأَلُوا اللَّهَ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمًا
And in no wise covet those things in which Allah Hath bestowed His gifts More freely on some of you than on others: To men is allotted what they earn, and to women what they earn: But ask Allah of His bounty. For Allah hath full knowledge of all things.
o A true believer is expected to be happy when his/her brother/sister is blessed with a favour from Allaah.
o When you display your unhappiness, you are saying that Allaah is not just by giving such a favour on that Muslim.
o You are making yourself a better decision maker than Allaah.
o Feminism as a strange ideology makes women jealous of men’s role and they are not happy being women- sexual perversion of single parenthood, lesbianism and destruction of marriage institution is encouraged.
* Envy create negative psychological effects on a person who is envious.
o Always in a state of anger
o He/she may drive himself/herself crazy
o He/she may commit suicide.
* Imaan and envy cannot co-exist in one soul. The Prophet said “ Imaan and hasad (envy) do not gather together in the heart of a slave of Allaah” (al-Nasaii and classed as saheeh by Albani).
HOW DO YOU IDENTITY THAT YOU HAVE ENVY?
* To try to conceal the virtue and goodness of knowledge-in knowledge, wisdom, wealth.
* He does not like it when others mention or talk good of the other person.
* He/she remains silent and pretends like he/she does not know of the good that the other one has done.
* It is one of the greatest causes of backbiting
* He/she tries to pull down the other person.
HOW DOES ONE FREE HIMSELF/HERSELF OF THE DISEASE?
* To know that Allaah’s pleasure is with the one without envy.
Hadeeth:
“The prophet thrice said, a man of paradise would soon appear. On the three occasions, a particular man would appear. Abdullah b. Amr(RA) followed him to his house and explained that he wanted to stay with him because he has problem with his father (only to observe him and his deeds). He did not notice anything special, no tahajjud and narrated what the Prophet (saw) said about him. The man said, all that I do is what you have seen. But I also find in my soul no act of deception towards any Muslim nor do I have envy towards anyone for the blessings that Allaah has bestowed upon him. Abdullah said, this is what makes you reach paradise” (Musnad of Ahmad and graded saheeh by Albani).
* The person should remind himself of the evil effects of envy in this world and hereafter. Q. 26:88
"The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail,
* Repel the feeling of envy by reading the Qur’aan, perform a nawafil prayer.
* One should improve his actions/relations towards the one that he has such feelings of envy for. reported by Anas also, “By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, none of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”[ Saheeh al-Bukhaaree [Eng. Trans. 1/19 no. 12], Saheeh Muslim [Eng. Trans. 1/31 no. 72, 73]
* You should control yourself, so everything that you did in the process of your envy for someone else like any saying or action, you should now strive to do the opposite
* One should know that the true bounties are the bounties of the Hereafter.
STRENGTHENING OUR LOVE FOR ALLAAH’S SAKE
* Informing your brother/sister that you love him/her
“If one of you loves his brother, then let him tell him that he loves him” (Bukharee, Abu Dawuud).
* “Love the one whom you love in moderation perhaps one day he will be one whom you hate, and hate the one whom you hate in moderation, perhaps, one day he will be one whom you love (Bukharee).
* Umar (RA) also advised “Do not hate maliciously-to the extent that you wish your companion to perish and be destroyed” (Bukharee).
* Spreading the greetings of Salaam “ Spread salaam amongst yourselves”(Muslim)
* Exchange gifts “ Give gifts and you will love one another” (Bukharee).
* Visiting “Visit now and again and your love will increase” (saheehul jami).
Moderation in love and hatred (middle cause).
Obedience to Allaah-If you crave the love of other Muslims, increase your righteous actions.
On those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, will (Allah) Most Gracious bestow love.
RIGHTEOUS COMPETITION
i. Righteous competition is not a disease of heart. Q. 83:26
The seal thereof will be Musk: And for this let those aspire, who have aspirations:
ii. In righteous competition
* One wishes he has goodness and even excels other in goodness
* He does not mind if others have the same goodness
* The competition is with respect to the Hereafter and not for matters of the world.
* Hadeeth: “ There is to be no envy except with respect to two: A person to whom Allaah has given wealth and he uses it up for the purposes of truth. And another person whom Allaah has given wisdom and judges by it and teaches it” (Bukharee).
* Al-Bukhaaree also reports this hadeeth from Aboo Hurayrah and its wording is, “There is no desirable form of jealousy except for two types: a person to whom Allaah has given the Qur’aan and he recites it day and night, so when a person hears him he says, ‘If only I were given the likes of what he has been given so that I may act upon it the way this person is.’ And a person to whom Allaah has bestowed wealth and he spends in the cause of Truth, so a person says, ‘If only I were given the likes of what he has been given, so that I may act upon it the way this person is.’”( Eng. Trans. 6/501 no. 544)
* The competition between Abubakr and Umar was a classical example of righteous competition.
