Christmas Time - Renewal?
Christmas and Renewal ; Our world in trouble.
Date: 12/25/2008 7:04:23 PM ( 16 y ) ... viewed 1946 times It is Christmas Day 2008. Because of the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and the pending New Year, these couple of weeks seems to be when many of us have a thought about renewal.
It might just be personal renewal, in the form of a "resolution", a declaration of a bad habit to break. Once again, I am going to quit smoking [what an awful habit it is!].
It might be something much bigger though, especially this year. It seems that many of the "sins" we have committed are coming back at us.
We are seeing the biggest financial crisis since the great depression [or so we are told].
In some parts of the world we are having the coldest winter in years, with the most snow EVER, and other places are seeing their worst droughts and heat waves ever. We set a new record for "global average temperature" last year. Every year, it is really more apocalyptic than the previous year, and it will be until we finally start to reduce the CO2 emissions that are causing, or at least contributing to, those changes.
There are more wars, more social clashes, and more people starving and dying of disease that ever before. The population is the largest it has ever been.
So, without bumming you out more than necessary, lets ask "WHAT CAN WE DO TO MAKE IT BETTER?". The answer is to get back to basic morality.
Morality, in terms of doing the right thing.
All of these big problems we are having can be traced back to basic immorality such as greed, theft, breaking rules, not following the Golden Rule [where we do not do things to others that we would not want done to us] ; it is just the classis sins, nothing to do with religion at all, just behaving badly. Mostly, it is GREED.
The financial crisis is a result of bankers trying to get too much from the poor - they squeezed the poor so hard that the poor could no longer pay and that caused the shortfalls in the loan payback budgets... and then not enough money left to loan out after that. I call that GREED.
Global warming is a result of our failure to start using clean energy, and that is due to GREED too. Coal and Oil are favored by the oil and coal people, and it is because they have gotten so wealthy from their coal and oil that they now have political clout, and so they managed to stop renewable energy, and electric cars, from becoming a reality in our world. Those two things would have made, and still can make, a HUGE difference in how much pollution the USA puts out. And, if the USA did it, then India and China would do it. But oil and coal people, like I said, stopped it from happening. And they continue to fight against renewable energy and electric cars every step of the way. [is that why GM is in trouble? - because they were about to launch an electric car, the Volt?...naw.... that is paranoid thinking....].
Some of the current wars, and the starvation, and disease, is obviously the result of very evil people such as Mugabe. Nobody disagrees with that. There are lots of wars though, and it does seem that some of them are all about taking another nation's natural resources, a very common reason for wars through the ages. Religion, hypocritically, is at the root of some wars, and political power may be behind those wars and killings. Power = GREED.
So far, I have covered the apocalyptic type issues of environmental destruction, financial chaos, and wars. Those sound a lot like the prophesies of doom. Ancient prophets would have tossed in earthquakes and fires too, plus a great battle of the titans or gods. Notice that it is allways things that were familiiar to the cultures, and never anything new that nobody have ever heard of... and to me that means that all the prophets were just "making it up", it wasn't really a vision of things to come. They were just doing their job.
The prophets job was to point out that people need to be good or bad things will happen to us. I won't pretend to be a prophet, or even an example of goodness, but it is true that if we continue on this path, if we continue to do these things, we are headed for very hard times. Allready many people are suffering, and dying. The oceans are rising, the atmosphere is super-charged with heat energy and we are seeing the effects of it. People are killing each other in wars and other clashes. Our financial system is in chaose and many are suffering because of it, and it could get much worse. And it is all due to immorality.
So, it being Christmas, it is a good time to ask ourselves if we are willing to commit to renewal of our world. Will we find the strength to stand up and demand change, to ask that powerfull people start behaving morally? Will we be good examples for others to follow? We have the day off,and time to ponder these things. Our world has never needed it more than now.
