Blog: Mirena side effects- joint pain
Mood swings, joint pains, back aches, swelling in legs and arms, shoulders, depression? Sounds like me before I had the Mirena removed. I told myself I must come back to this website once it was removed to tell the difference. Its a shame that before having the mirena inserted in Jan 05 i was pretty healthy but afterwards I was like an old woman! Pains , grouchyness, tiredness, depressed but especially the joint pain that would come and go and swelling in different parts of my body. I came here I was so HAPPY I WAS NOT Crazy-- so to prove that, i had my $450 (paid by me) problem removed 3 months later. I of course hesitated in doing this because I wanted it to work. Anyways my body is still trying not to attack itself but all my systoms are slowly going away---thanks doc for assuring me it was NOT the mierna :( Its a ashame that doctors don't think like humm maybe this is the mierena let me do some research. Anyways don't put your mind and your body through this try anything else life is waaaay to short to force yourself to be unhealthy by having the mirena!

I recently read your message regarding joint pain after having the mirena inserted. I had the mirena inserted approximately a year ago. About 3 to 4 month ago I started to experience right hip pain and it felt as though my hip was popping out of joint. Recently I have begun having low back pain. Did your joint pain affect your hips and did you have any back pain? Thanks for your help.

I am an attorney in Dallas, Texas. I have had the exact problems since the IUD was inserted in December. I have become so bloated that I feel miserable all of the time. I am basically to the point where I have begun starving myself to offset the weight gain. I was on my period when I had the Mirena inserted and haven't quit bleeding since. I feel nauseated twenty-four hours a day coupled with complete exhaustion. Every bit of information that I have seen on Mirena does not list the side effects I was experiencing. I have been taking a prescription anti-bloating mediation and have almost become dehydrated as a result. I have made a couple of trips to the doctor and have been aware thats something felt wrong. I am one hour from my appointment to have Mirena removed.
I am asking you for help. I have decided to do something about this. There are too many women suffering as I have been and it is just inexecusable. I am planning to pursue this issue with the manufacturer. I understand that some have had good results, but the majority have not.
I will initiate an action at no cost to you. Please provide me with your name and contact info via email or fax, phone, etc. if you have had problems and want to make a difference. The more women that assist, the more likely we are to make a difference and possibly recover for the pain and frustration we have suffered.
Thanks.

Wow!! This is so hard for me to believe. All the worries that I have had about my health are all right here. I thought that I was one step away from going crazy!! I have had Mirena now for almost two years. Since that time I have not been my self. I have had fatigue and dizziness. I was put on Zoloft for depression and it was thought that I was having trouble with my heart even though all my tests would come back fine. I am only 28 years old and I feel like I am 78 years old. My husband has commented on my "moods" and I have noticed my "moods" my self. I usually have a period each month but when it starts it doesn't know when to quit(about 2-3 weeks). I have told my doctor about my symptoms and questioned him if it could be related to it but he would always say no. I have said may times that I felt like I was pregnant because all I want to do is sleep, and eat. I have gained about 20-30 pounds. Acne is a whole other story. As a teenager I never had a problem with my skin but since Mirena came along I have fought with it the entire time. I also had a friend that had Mirena removed just because of it causing acne!!! I have had the hot flashes also. What a blessing to find this site. With each comment I read I had a little more hope of getting back ot my old self again!!! I would love to hear from some one who has had it removed and how they feel now. I have two children and it makes me very upset to think that this little device has held me back from "feeling" like playing with them and I have been known to yell at them when I am in some of my "moods". I would love to help in any way that I can!!

I just had my mirena removed yesterday. I have been having joint pain for several months. After finding and reading the posting I decided to have it removed as soon as possible. Of coarse the doctors have never heard of anything esp. joint pain attributing to this IUD. Although she was interested and wanted me to call and notify her if my symptoms got better. I know she thought I was crazy. She said she could not understand why progesteron would cause any of these side effects. Hormones are hormones and can screw up a woman's chemistry. Perfect example-pregnancy,menapause, and thyroidism the list could con't.
I am 34 years old they have referred me to a rheumatiod specialist. They prescribed me 800 mg. of ibuprofin 3x a day. No one in either side of my family has this crippling disease. I never had any problems until after I had the IUD placed and they cannot explain to me otherwise how this could possibly happen. Sorry for rambling but this has trully been disturbing to me and needed to find, talk, and sympathize w/ others going through the samething. Good Luck!

I would like to hear if your symptoms are getting better. I'm 8 months into my mirena and just started to investigate the relationship bwt my joint pains/fatigue (also new and no family history of such--I'm also 37..too young for this kind of prob!) and the IUD. No other probs, but chronic joint pain and fatigue.

I recently had the Mirena IUD removed after extreme joint pain. There were days I had to hold up my right arm to even comb my hair in the morning, and I can relate to the lady who wrote she went down the stairs on her butt. And finger joint pain and swelling was a daily occurance. After having the IUD removed, it was only days before I noticed those symptoms gradually disappearing. I could bend my fingers again! It took a few more days for the swelling to subside but within a week I was nearly back to my pre-Mirena state of no pain or swelling.
A side note that no one really talks about is the bleeding you will likely experience after removal. I was fine for a few days after removal, but then about 40 hours after removal I bleed a lot, enough to soak through a tampon in an hour at some points in the day. And not to be graphic, but is was stringy and clumpy blood. I just wanted to share it with others so they don't get worried like I did. I guess a person should still call their Dr. or better yet, do what I forgot to do...ask your Dr. what kind of bleeding to expect, what is normal and what is worrisome. The heavy bleeding lasted for about 5 days. But in the end, I'm glad it's gone and I feel about 90% better than I did a week ago!!!
The Mirena seems to work for some people, but it appears there is a small percentage of us whose systems reject it, so follow your own bodies cues, just because a friend doesn't have any trouble with it or a Dr. tells you it can't be that doesn't mean it isn't true. The pain is real and you need to find the cause...in my case, I'm truly convinced it was the Mirena. Thanks to all of you who shared your experiences on this site, without it I wouldn't have even considered it could have been a Mirena side effect. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I will making an appointment first thing tomorrow to have mine removed. I have had it 15 months, and thought i was on my own with all these symptoms, but reading these posts has convinced me im not wrong. My symptoms are massive weight gain (about 2-3 stone), mood swings (almost like permanent PMT), spots, loss of sex drive, peiods lasting 2-3 weeks and extreme fatigue. You can contact me via email at jo.raven40@ntlworld.com

I have also had problems after the Mirena, Joint pain being one of of them,
let me know if you are still working on a class action, I do have a preexisting
thyroid condition, read: no thyroid due to cancer, howver was never told Id have a problem by my doctors. After going Hypo have had very persitant symptoms, and have
wondered if some arent due to the Mirena since Id not had any problems till afterward.

Hi,
I had a Mirena inserted a little over 6 months ago after having a copper IUD removed. I was pretty happy w/ the copper IUD (except for the heavy bleeding) but the Dr. insisted that the Mirena was better. Since I have noticed occasional joint pain in the hips, sensitive breasts and unwanted facial hair--more than previously. I am 45 & probably in perimenopause, so these symptoms could be b/c of that BUT I do find it curious that I never had these joint pains before.
Did you ever get some answers to your question? I am curious and thinking of having mine removed.

- mirena side effects- hip and lower baqck pain by bettyboo

Just wondering what ever happened with your symptoms? I am suffering the same issues, IE Hip and lower back. Was it indeed your IUD? I just had an MRI and the doctor said I am showing significant bone loss. They think it is possibly the onset of rheumatism, which is often brought on by a "change in hormones" is why I began to consider my mirena as a cause of all my pain. Have you heard anything about this in conjuction with mirena?????

after experiencing fluid retntion and excessive swelling in legs and other areas ,when I questioned the GP could it be my coil she replied 'didnt think of that ' but has refused to remove it .... I will now make arrangements to have this done, as I can not cope with all the drugs to combat the pain and swelling, all my bloods have come back normal so it seems a likley cause.
