For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Matthew 16:27
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matthew 3:10
Seems to me if you don't do good works you'll be "cast into the fire", and when Jesus comes back he's going to reward you for your good works. So which is it? Take the gift and don't do good works, or do good works and don't receive the gift, or do both? Seems to me if you accept the gift, you do good works out of your love for God automatically. Also a person can give lip service to God and think they have been given the gift, but will they actually receive it?
Jesus said you'll know a good tree by the fruit it bears. (paraphrasing) It seems very clear to me.
Don't get lost in the teachings of man.
