Salting, smoking and pickling foods seem to be associated with the rates of stomach cancers in Japan, Iceland and Chile.

One thing is clear though, as many others have indicated, it does have something to do with diet. However, the environment could have something big to do with it as well...

Chisso Corporation, a company located in Kumamoto Japan, dumped an estimated 27 tons of mercury compounds into Minamata Bay.
