Re: Does mercury toxicity (from amalgams) cause permanent damage?
You say that your plan does not cover crowns and therefore the dentist would not lie and tell you to get them. If you get the crowns, would'nt you have to pay for them and thus your dentist has a motive to lie. Another possibility is that your dentist is not dishonest, just mislead. Dentists are very conventional, conservative conformist people in general and they probably believe what they are taught in dental school (mercury
Amalgam exposure is negligible, crowns are beneficial)without asking questions.
It is only through years of practice that the brighter ones notice that teeth with crowns are more likely to die leading to
root canals or extractions and that periodontal problems infection and receeding gums are much more likely under crowns than large fillings. The counter argument is that these problems would have occured anyway .I don't buy that argument since I was told to have several crowns ,only had some of those reccomended, and only have problems with the crowned teeth. Crowns are expensive ,even with insurance,so many people put them off for years.Several people that I know who were told to have crowns but did'nt have no problems with those teeth.Drilling a tooth down to a stub is very traumatic (often fatal) to its nerve.Dr Frank Jerome argues, and it makes sense, that one should never get rid of healthy tooth structure. If you had an infection in your finger tip, would you cut off your entire hand.
One excuse that dentists use to sell crowns is that the tooth is fractured. There is no evidence that a crown will protect a fractured tooth. Also, if your tooth is fractured ,it was probably fractured by a mercury filling . Mercury expands and contracts;that is why it's used in thermometers.
I suggest you read the part of Frank Jerome's book that deals with crowns before you get any more of them.It won't take more than an hour.
