According to the label on the Now brand of Kelp powder, i/4 teaspoon gives 485 mcg of iodine. I am taking about two tablespoons full a day of the Frontier brand kelp which is a finer powder and seemed to give me better results after immediately switching to it. I suspect it may be the surface area being greater with the finer powder and possibly better assimilation. Then as you said, there can be no real standardization with kelp due to variability from one plant to the next.
At any rate the 2 tablespoons full would net 11.6 mg if my calculations are correct. I have no idea what kind of variation to expect.
