Well that depends on so many factors, like stress, health poblem or like, a new cat. I suggest you to find two books, one called "The New Natural Cat" by Anitra Frazier, and "The Language of Animals: 7 Steps to Communicating with Animals" by Carol Gurney (there's several short stories with cats that urinates out of litter box).

The problem with urinating is hard to diagnose without providing required information to determine the cause of it.

Your post suggests that you brought a new cat. Well that can cause some stress to your first cat. Also another thing to consider, what kind of cleaner do you use for the carpet? Does it use ammonia? If yes, the be warned that ammonia smells like urine to any cat. The are also cleaning products that do not have ammonia, and as well products that can neutralize the ammonia left as residue in the carpet.
