How we lost 70lbs
Hi, I lost 20lbs and my husband lost 50lbs by following the dietary recommendations in
Andreas Moritz ' book Timeless Secrets of Health and Rejuvenation. Basically we decreased our portion sizes, cut WAY back on meats, and cut out grains and sugar. Since losing the weight we've added back whole grains and once in a while I'll bake a half batch of cookies or some other baked treat. Before I learned about ayurveda I tried the raw foods diet and fasting which were very hard on my body.
We mostly stick to an ayurvedic diet. We eat lots of vegetables, some grains, some raw dairy, plenty of good fats. We have a bowl of fresh fruit every morning. I substitute vegetables where I used to use carbs, like instead of toast with breakfast I'll cut a tomato in half and salt and pepper it, and put a slice of cheese on it and put it under the broiler for a minute. Or I'll saute some spinach with scallions and garlic.
Also, my husband does a half hour or more of cardio every day. We converted a room to a home gym and have a treadmill and exercise bike. I jump on a rebounder and do yoga. I rented nearly all the exercise videos and dvds in my library and got copies of my favorites. Being vata I don't do as much exercise as he does.
In addition to the weight loss, my cholesterol went from 200 to 119 and my husband got off Lipitor. My husband had heart problems and was prediabetic. We were both sedentary. Now when we travel we like to get out and explore on foot. We're just a lot more ALIVE now! We have more energy and do more. We often go for long walks after dinner. We spend more time enjoying each other instead of just watching tv.
It sounds like a lot of change, but it didn't happen all at once; I've been making changes for about 3 years and my husband for a year. I wanted to change before I got cancer or heart disease, but my husband put it off until he had to have a triple bypass. All of a sudden, boy was he willing to eat salad and go for a walk!! I highly recommend not waiting that long :)
I hope some of this is useful to you. I learned a lot from reading the
Ask Andreas Forum and then when I got his book I made some very significant lifestyle changes. I highly highly recommend getting his book. I wish I'd had it instead of wasting my time with fasting and other stuff that wasn't appropriate for my body type.
