oooooh, I love this symbolism. I often dream of cats and dogs and know what they symbolize for me. Dream books don't match - so I'll tell you what I get for it and you can see if it resonates.

Cats I see as my feminine, intuitive, subconscious/inner Self. Dogs I see as my masculine, rational, conscious/outer Self.

Your dream seems to be showing you that you have been neglecting your Self (your WHOLE self) for too long. You need nourishment! ....and Water! The water was what revived them from their hibernation/slumber/unconsciousness. A part of you is thirsty for spiritual nourishment (water). That the dog and cat ended up looking happy and licking each others faces is amazingly positive! Your intuitive/subconscious self and your rational/conscious self are paying attention to each other...communicating. A long slumbering part of you has awakened Dianna!
