But you are right, don't use them while driving or riding.
But they are very good for talking leisurely strolls, which is one thing besides sitting and sunning yourself, when you should be using them. you only where them for 10-20 minutes at a time anyway...
I've always been leery of the programs sold over internet, and the high price seminars. If you could mention what exercises they have you doing...
But definitely, not all exercises are equal - the 'Bates Method' is too basic for all the flavours of myopia out there - every myopic condition will have a specific exercise to treat it the best. The above book I mentioned is the best thus far (I've come across).
