Burning questions regarding christianity, the bible, etc.

Well, I have studied the bible, not in its entirety, but enough to get a good "idea". In the bible it says, thou shall not kill. Yet, when God was leading his people to the promise land did they not kill? It almost seems hypocritical. Why kill, and then preach that it is wrong? This one bothers me. Another burning question is how we have so many different races of people. If we all started with Adam and Eve how then do we have black, white, and everything in between? What were the dinosaurs? There is no mention of them in the bible. We go from creating the earth to Adam and Eve. While my beliefs in Christianity are strong, I can't help but question these things.
