Re: i used to suffer from Exfoliative Cheilitis badly...
My lips have been peeling since July. It all started when I was doing the
Liver Cleansing diet, the Fat Flush Plan! I thought it was a vitamin problem, then perhaps eating too much smoked turkey, or somehow the diet was nutritionally deficient. I also thought maybe I needed more fish oils. Nothing was helping. A couple of months later, I went to my internist who said it was a fungal infection of the lips. I've been using a cream that is antifungal with a steroid too. I'm now using it once a day instead of twice and have added Shaklee's Multipurpose cream (herbal) and their C&E PM repair cream. It seems overall better, but one area that had thinned down a lot (perhaps where a tooth rubs more), still peels. I like to think it is gradually healing. This all was at first concurrent with some eczema (perhaps a dermatitis had called it peeling cheilitis) on my thumb, but my doctor felt that was unrelated. One thing I discovered is that all of this began right when I started using (not all the time) a toothpaste with xylitol. I happen to have a birch allergy and xylitol comes from birch. In September (I think) I had gone off the antifungal cream and used a lip pencil and lipstick one day and my lips felt hot and throbbed and peeled completely. At that point I thought maybe the make-up or the wood in the pencil (cedar) was the problem. I still haven't tried the make-up again yet. The fact that one area where a tooth sort of rubs more (I think) is worse makes me really wonder about the xylitol issue. Still, I haven't used anything with birch for at least a month and this hasn't gone away totally! I'm planning on stopping the antifungal in a couple of days, continuing the two natural creams, and also continuing taking probiotics. BTW, a bit after the fat flush plan, when I started taking a Chinese liver formula, I had what appeared to be two spontaneous liver cleanses. It seems quite possible since the FFP involves lots of juices for 2 weeks, plus plenty of oils. The liver formula probably stimulated the process. I do
