Re: Do I really need animal protein?
I've never had a problem, and I haven't had animal protein in over 2 years. I wonder what your nutritionist thinks is the difference between animal protein and any other kind of protein? Oh yeah, that's right - cholesterol and fat...lol.
I signed on at fitday.com last year, and keyed in a bunch of foods besides animal food to see what had a lot of protein. I found that some greens, most notably spinach and romaine, and lots of nuts and seeds, have tons of protein, and are delicious, and readily available. What I do is add greens to my smoothies, eat salads, and have 'energy soup' almost every day, and I've never had a problem - my hair, skin, and nails look fine, and healthy. I put the link to fitday at the bottom of this post in case you'd like to check it out.
Energy soup is an avocado and a whole bunch of greens blended together with water. I add dulse or salt, and sometimes a squeeze of lemon. I eat it at room temperature. It's delicious.
You could ask your nutritionist why he/she feels that animal protein is better/different than any other kind, and see what he/she has to say about it. I know nothing about low thyroids or what to eat when one has that, I'm just relating my personal experiences and hoping that it helps in some way.
