Re: urgent question about "topical" antibiotic
Metronidazole "M" is the active ingredient in Metrogel, as it is for Flagyl, a common
Antibiotic pill. According to 3M Pharmaceuticals, your bloodstream levels of M would have been incidental, not that this couldn't necessarily affect your body in inadverdent and unexpected ways. Per 3M, bloodstream levels of M after vaginal application of Metrogel were 2%-4% of what they typically are after taking a 500mg oral dose of M. So you were getting about 1/33rd what you would have if you took this
Antibiotic orally.
This doesn't really apply to you, but when Metrogel was applied to the faces of rosacea (skin rash) patients, blood serum levels of M were as follows: "The serum metronidazole concentrations were below the detectable limits of the assay at the majority of time points in all patients. Three of the patients had no detectable serum concentrations of metronidazole at any time point." It would appear that vaginal absorption is higher than skin absorption for this product.
As for Neosporin, and I assume you're talking about "Neosporin Lip Treatment," this product contains neither neomycin, nor other
Antibiotics .
If the Neosporin you took was NOT their lip treatment, you can call Pfizer at 1-800-223-0182 if you want, and ask about skin absorption blood serum levels.
My suggestion would be to not worry about all this, use only a non-
Antibiotic lip treatment for chapping, and use vaginal infection prescriptive agents when necessary (and only when necessary), but first give natural cures a try.
