If memory serves, something to do with failed prophecies about the last things, end times, etc. Seems to be characterisitic of gifted servants of God. Richard Wurmbrandt and Samuel Doctorian (inter alia) went the same way. They claim special revelations, visions, etc., and when they fail, their followers drift away. It's an old story, but surprisingly resilient.
