I'm not an expert on this pathway, but I am assuming if there was no gluthathion protection, then autocrine cellular defenses would be useless.
All it would take is a nasty viral exposure or toxin to kill you.

This would leave the unfortunate individual vulnerable to lethal circumstances at every turn. I hope there are genetic back-up systems to help maintain life-support during such instances.
