Okay, you definitely need both lids off at the same time.
Pit may have an access lid if it is that large. Sounds like a block tank.
Make sure the pipe is CLEAR from the septic to the Pit.
As to back flow - that can only be Water in the outlet pipe and a small area above the pipe in the pit. Pipe enters the pit near the top. Sounds like the pit is a good distance from the septic tank.

Can't really advise on what to try/do until you have this sorted. As to chemical treatment, may be best to wait until pit starts to refill. Treating empty will only effect the lowest level of the pit. Tweet
