Selenium is used in the thyroid to mop up hydrogen peroxide that is a by product of T3 and T4 production. When the thyroid hurts, taking selenium helps, because it takes away the peroxide.
Also, selenium makes it possible for the body to convert T4 to T3. T3 is the thyroid hormone that is used by the cells. If you were low in selenium and then started taking it, your body would start converting T4 to T3 and by doing so give you more energy, because suddenly more T3 would be available.
If at the same time you are Iodine deficient, T4 is not being produced in sufficient quantities.
So, once the T4 you still had in your system was used up (all converted to T3), you feel tired again.
