It is in textbooks to this day, mostly phycology books. The problem is that James Wilson came up with a new name….. “Adrenal Fatigue”
Here is an article published in the Journal of Neurophychiatry summarizing the work of Hans Selye.

If you went into your doctor’s office and said “I think I have the General Adaptation Syndrome” ….. They could actually look it up in their books.
It is in my wife psychiatric nursing book.
Note how the 3 stages of the GAS are exactly the same as Adrenal Fatigue. That’s because they are the same thing.
The article even talks about the “resistance stage”. It is the same language as adrenal fatigue.
But much more than the adrenals are involved. Several organs atrophy during chronic stress. The thymus shrinks since is it not used during chronic stress … no time to fight infections when fighting a tiger.
The adrenal gland enlarges to keep up with all of the work it is being asked to do.
However ….at stage 3, “the animals lose their resistance and succumb with symptoms similar to those seen in the first stage, this phase of exhaustion being regarded as the third stage of the syndrome”
Sound Familiar?
Now. .. he didn’t do saliva test on the poor rats. But for those of us that have progressed to late Stage 3 as Lam calls it, it is common to have multiple low cortisol readings.
But it is important to remember that chronic stress trashes every organ and cell in your body. Much more than the adrenals are involved.
“Adrenal Fatigue” made a nice compact book name to market. James Wilson does talk a lot about the GAS. So the connection is right there.
Sherpa …. I used to get the sharp pains in my adrenal area too. Felt like someone was stabbing me.
