Somehow, I missed this when you originally posted it.

Actually, the circuit that he uses removes the 1 k-ohm output safety resistor and replaces it with a capacitor of about 1.0 to 10 mfd. This offers very little impedance to the output but at the same time, serves as an AC coupled network. This is why it produces a very negative dip under human load.

This aspect of the zapper is shown in stark contrast at Ultimate Zapper vs UZI Comparison along with several other important factors.
