Re: How should I break my water fast? Intolerant to fructose.
I was just about to ask a similar question. I am just finishing day 11 of a planned 15 day water fast. Like you I plan to continue a paleo/low carb diet after the fast. On the raw paleo website I found some people who suggested kombucha and then bone broth on the first day post-fast.
This is what I intend to do, along with some lacto-fermented sauerkraut and maybe Greek yogurt. The next day I will rotate the above mentioned foods throughout the day and try for some softly coddled eggs later in the afternoon.
However, it is exceedingly hard to find any qualified fasting expert to espouse any method of breaking the fast that is not fruit. I attribute this to the ubiquitous notion that carbohydrates should constitute the bulk of our diets; scientific research and I disagree with that theory. However, I would prefer some validation to my plans before embarking on them.
From my limited understanding, it seems that the body is currently ketogenic and has shut down the processes to convert sugar. Also, I have gathered that switching back and forth between these processes requires the body to exert energy. Fruit is a
Sugar and will require the body to switch methods while already weak from the fast. This leads me to the conclusion that breaking the fast with a deluge of fructose will overtax my body and probably cause rapid weight gain.
Regardless of what I think, even a lot of the vegan/raw foodies agree that kombucha is a good way to break a water fast. Since you are allergic to fructose, be sure to check the labels for a plain one without any added fruit juice. Whole Foods should carry it.
On a side note, I believe that I have cured a nagging toothache, some symptoms of PCOS, and stretch marks and other skin blemishes while on the fast so far.
