Chinese medicine suggests that we should only drink when thirsty. Moreover, it is important not to drink fluid that is too cold (i.e. colder than room temperature), as this places additional stress on our internal organs.
I make a flask of ginger tea each morning and sip small amounts throughout the day. Warming teas such as ginger are considered beneficial and advocated in both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
Health websites and magazines often recommend that we drink at least X glasses of water every day. This may be useful for some body types, people who are doing tiring, sweaty work in hot conditions, or those who do not consume plant food. However, for the majority of people, I believe it is better to listen to our bodies, and drink only when thirsty.
