I could be wrong, but at this moment I am thinking the fat layer protected your lips from the bacteria infection in your saliva. Perhaps the silicone strips also protected my lips from a bacteria infection in my saliva (still waiting on test results). And the Iodine drops helped kill or keep this bacteria off my lips.
