To achieve any effectiveness, yes. You will need a positive offset square wave.

NO. It will convert the signal to positive half sine wave or negative half sine wave depending on orientation. It will not produce a positive offset or a square wave with harmonics which is what you need.

Zappers work, zappicators do not. At least none of the ones I have tried.

However, zappers are not perfect and there is a tremendous variation between units, especially with standard zappers. This is due to the accuracy limitations of the circuitry as the ones based on 555 timers or other RC timers are not exact.
