Re: Crown Corporation
Hey Spud, I wasn't comparing your country to ours. That's why I was asking "can you show me", or more importantly yourself, what your Constitution says. I figured your Constitution is a lot different than ours, since it was probably an "act" (or permission was) granted by the King or Queen for your country to exist I'm guessing?
Anyway, I was just wanting you to look for yourself to see if your government is acting within the bounds of your Constitution. If it says it's ok to make a profit, then so be it. If not, it's an illegal government. Simple as that. And cut that flower in the bud. If it's not operating within your Constitution, then it's no better than an illegal group of mobsters. Just like ours.
I think your comment about Telstra shows they are in business. The question is, does your Constitution allow your government to be in business?
You said:
"It is the elected members of parliament that make the laws, not the judiciary. Legislation is put forward, and passed or not, after debate."
I'm guessing again, but I would think your parliament makes the laws, and the judiciary still rules on what those laws really mean, because there are gray areas in every law. For instance, how was it determined Telstra needed to be "partly privatised"?
I hope you know I wasn't trying to demean you or your country in any way. And I wasn't accusing you of being unaware, ignorant, not caring, too busy or too trusting. Well maybe too trusting. :-) I was just saying most people fit into one of those categories.
I just wanted you to look for yourself and see if your Constitution allows your government to be a business. And if it does and the people are happy, so be it. I'm definately not someone who thinks everybody should be like me, or the world should be like America. That's our stupid politicians.
But I do know the economies will collapse. I do know it will affect you, but probably not as much as us, since you're kind of tucked away "down under" being an island to itself. Your country is hardy, inventive and outspoken, which I like!
Anyway, the bottom line to what I was saying is look at your Constitution for yourself and see if your government is operating according to what it says. If it isn't, just look over here to see what your country will eventually be like. And don't let it ever become what this country has become. That's all I'm saying. Learn from the mistakes we've made over here. :-)
