My guess, is because of the adrenal fatigue and your hormones being out of wack. I had a strange experience too. I stopped breast feeding my daughter at 4 months due to dwindling milk supply, despite doing frequent feedings and drinking so much fenugreek that I smelled like maple syrup! When my daughter was 4 years old, we adopted a kitten. When I held that little guy up close in my arms, I felt the "let down" and I could feel my ducts fill. I also had years of nipple discharge that ranged milky to clear to yellow to green. I'd had blood tests for my pitutary and it was ok, the doctors were never concerned. It finally cleared up once and for all with Iodine supplementation.
Have you talked to an endocrinologist? The pitutary is responsible for the prolactin and the pitutary is affected by thyroid and adrenal dysfunction, via the HPA axis.
BTW, it is possible for a woman to get her body to breast feed, even when she's never given birth.
