Re: selenium warning edit
I find the need to balance this article; when I read stuff like this I check with my inner knowledge, check with my experience AND my observation of people throughout many years.
First of all; blaming selenium (instead of mercury) for alzheimer even schizophrenia;
It happens to be so that one of my jobs is in a mental hospital. Many years ago when I studied I worked on an intstitution for old people with dementia and alzheimer.
So I know/knew a few having these diseases.
NONE of these have ever touched a selenium pill.
Probably all people over 40 in my country have or have had amalgam; probably all of these too.
But; not all people with
Amalgam get these diseases; so there is plenty of things we can do to prevent it.
Several studies have actually shown selenium to PROTECT the brain and body from oxidative damage from mercury.
I would rather look into PUFAs role in oxidative damage because our selenium is to low. And aluminium and fluoride to high ++

"
Since then, numerous studies have
shown selenium supplementation counteracts the negative
impacts of exposure to mercury, particularly in regard to
neurotoxicity, fetotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. The
ability of selenium compounds to decrease the toxic action of
mercury has been established in all investigated species of
mammals, birds, and fish (16-17)."

"
It is now known that selenium is
essential for the normal function of many of the systems of
the body and selenium deficiency can have adverse
consequences on these systems. Selenium can act as a growth
factor; has powerful antioxidant and anticancer properties;
and supports normal thyroid hormone homeostasis,
immunity, and fertility"
" All physicians have been aware of the relationship between selenium and brain poisoning for 20 years "
-I know no physican that knows much about selenium; and again, studies have shown selenium to protect the brain.
What we not have discussed at this forum is that some areas of the world has to little selenium in the soil; Scandinavia, most of Europe, China are low. Some part of the US are very high; on my NOW selenium box there was a warning of not taking much if you live in the Dakota (?) area.
So is there a need to adjust the selenium dosage depending on where you live ?
I will post more later about my own experience with selenium, but this is a start.
