Really not sure, but, I think I read something in Paul Pitchford's Book, "Healing With Whole Foods", --look up spirulina. But I read all of those books listed quite some time ago. So I'm not 100% sure which book it was. I am sure when I spoke with a teacher of Chinese Medicine, several years ago, who told me to be careful that it was safe to take Chlorella indescrimintately due to the higher chlorophyll content, which makes it less cooling, but in general, Spirulina should be taken under the guise of someone that is proficient in Chinese Medicine as it depends on the persons illness (Excessive, Deficient,Cold,Heat/Dampness/Cooling). In other words, you need to know what you are doing when taking spirulina and cereal grasses because depending on your condition you might make it worse is what I got out of the conversation with her. I also read that a small precentage of people cannot tolerate chlorella, but most can. The trick is to start out slowly and gradually build up on a weekly basis.
I remember it saying that Chlorella is less Cooling and more Tonifying and that Spirulina is contraindicated/inadvisable for those with signs of Coldness or dampness.
Sorry I can't be more specific but you can read the books I have listed and speak to a practitioner of Chinese Medicine to be sure.
Wish I could be of more help, but I'm not a Dr. in Chinese Medicine and am just passing along information I gathered for myself while researching Chlorella for my own use. Basically, I am relaying what she told me, years ago, regarding using Chlorella vs. Spirulina and other grasses. Just check with a Dr. or teacher of Chinese medicine prior to using anything other than Chlorella is what I was told.
