Rest assured that TEPCO, and the Japanese government, are doing their best to minimize the event - perhaps on a large scale. It will greatly decrease their liabilities - it is about the money.
Restricting\censoring non-vetted information and such, like this is a very real possibility.
Understanding this, we should know that the event is many times worse than has been *officially* admitted.
I suspect, that if I was living anywhere close to that plant, or downwind from it, if all I could do is walk away from it, I would.
The radiation leaked into the environment will disperse around the planet and we will all absorb and have to deal with at least some of the waste, in some way for decades to come - just like the BP spill.
It is nothing new... with all of the pollution humans spew into the environment every day, with each flip of a light switch, or starting of a vehicle, we are all not much more than toxic waste receptacles and diffusing units along with the rest of the flora and fauna.
And people wonder why cancer rates and other diseases continue to go up in humans as well as other species... :-\
