People with a genetic predisposition to gluten sensitivity can develop celiac disease at any time in their life: some environmental factor (trigger) starts off the autoimmune reaction. People develop CD after stressful circumstances, operations, gastrointestinal infections, pregnancy and other triggers. The oldest person I've read who developed CD was an 86 year old woman - the youngest were infants.

Hulda Clark had 3 patients with gluten sensitivity, all under the age of 6. They were treated by treating the whole family for parasites and removing some pollutants from their bodies and were able to eat gluten again. But she did not follow these children long enough to find out if their problems with gluten returned. Years ago Drs thought that a sensitivity to gluten in children could clear up without further problems but this has been shown to be untrue for if these children have a predisposition to develop gluten sensitivity they will most likely have problems later in their lives. The average length of time between the development of symptoms and a diagnosis of CD is 12 years.

I feel it is important for people with intestinal problems to be tested for gluten sensitivity. Not all of them will have positive tests but if they are sensitive to gluten the damage to the small intestine will continue even tho they may appear to have recovered as long as they eat and are exposed to gluten.

People can have an allergy to wheat proteins but the celiac type of gluten sensitivity is an autoimmune reaction. Tweet
