I do psyllium every other day (upon waking). I put 2 teaspoons in half a glass of water and allow it to thicken a little. Then I add a little more water to the glass, stir and drink it down. It helps to keep me regular and I can tell a difference when I don't use it. Other options would be oat bran or flax seeds and some people do well using a formula of cascara sagrada, marshmallow, slippery elm, senna...although cascara is more of a laxative and shouldn't be used for a prolonged period of time. Dr. Christopher's brand is good form of herbal relief. The fiber is good for bringing water to the lower bowel and keeping the stools more loose and soft so they can more easily pass through the system. They are also not technically a laxative and can be used daily.
