I'll remain optimistic, I can see people's attitudes changing daily, but most people don't like change, and cost is always a factor unless you happen to be very wealthy.

As more people take up the technology, the costs will come down. While oil companies are allowed to drill wherever they please, and cut corners on safety, because the profits outweigh the risk, disasters such as the Gulf oil spill are going to happen, and I don't think that it will end any time soon. Oil companies will try and keep the cost of oil down, so the demand remains high.

People are enjoying the low cost of oil now, but the true cost is in what this over consumption of fossil fuels has done to the environment, and will continue to do, unless people start demanding something different.

Something as simple as encouraging people to make small changes, things such as driving your car 1/4 less than you do now. This is not a big change for most people, but if everyone took it up, it would be a huge change in the profits of oil companies.
