Re: colonoscopy/colonoscopies???? - Enemas?
Hi Katie, when you ask if you should do enemas when you can't go, my response would be if it's a choice between taking an enema and remaining constipated, then an enema is by far the more preferable and healthier option.
If you have tried all other alternatives, and still find that you are reaching 48 hours without an adequate BM, my suggestion would be by all means do an enema.
Two days is the maximum I allow for myself to go between natural movements, but if I go to bed any night without having had a BM during that day I'm already feeling uncomfortable. The next day if I still don't go on my own I get the enema bag out and use it by bed time at the latest.
The reality is that not everyone has the level of peristalic activity that enables their colon to regularly move the waste matter from the small intestine through the ascending colon, across the transverse, and then down the descending colon past the rectum to complete a satisfactory movement.
While colonics can in some cases help strengthen the muscles of the colon that regulate peristalsis, it doesn't always work well enough for everyone. Some of us were just born with a "lazy bowel", and for those of us in this category, cleansing enemas are in my opinion the most natural and reliable way to help maintain healthy regularity.
