I have been very depressed since beginning this diet through "The National Candida Center". I don't know what to do about it. I wake up feeling depressed and crying and suicidal. I hate this and I don't know if it's related to my candida or not. Anyone else have any problems with this??? Thanks
Depression has numerous causes. But in your case it sounds more like a serotonin deficiency. If you are on a Candida diet you are eliminating carbohydrates. Carbohydrates make us feel better because in the absence of protein the carbohydrates stimulate the release of tryptophan in the brain. This in turn is converted in to 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) then in to serotonin. Same principle that some people are depressive eaters. They go primarily for the junk food since the sugars stimulate their serotonin rush.
A few suggestions are chamomile tea, the richest herbal source of tryptophan or the supplement 5-HTP, which you can find in health food stores. Either way these should be taken 3 times daily and at least 30 minutes before meals since proteins will interfere with the serotonin production.
