I have to disagree with this comment, this just plays to the sterotypical view that abounds in our society. There are people that think they have the right to trample others, and they are the narcissists of this world, and looks or lack of them has nothing to do with this personality fault.

I do agree with setting boundaries though. Perhaps if the girl 'Jane' had been honest and given the OP some boundaries in the first place, as well as the OP having produced some of his own, then the whole misunderstanding would not have occured.

I really disagree with using the giving of gifts as a means to produce a gift from another. A sort of guilt gift. The OP should of been happy that his gift was appreciated and not expected to have the favor returned. Giving is for its own sake, not to entice or guilt someone else into following suite. Some people do not value birthdays as much as others, perhaps the OP should of found out what Jane's views on birthdays and gifts were, before expecting them to be the same as his.

I do not celebrate christmas, as I am not a christian, I tell people this, and still people insist on giving me christmas presents. I do not reciprocate, and these same people get upset when they don't receive a 'christmas present' from me. I question what the motive was for giving the gift in the first place, was it done for selfless or selfish reasons?

People will soon realise they are behaving like a doormat, when they are covered in the mud from the shoes of others.
