Re: Schisandra and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Hashimoto's does lead to HYPOthyroidism, but in the sub-acute stage one can be HYPERthyroid. I am a very rare case. I have had the antibodies for many years with normal thyroid values, and about 2 years ago, my thyroid finally went clinically hyper. When the immune system attacks the thyroid it destroys thyroid cells and upon "death" the cells release thyroid hormone. Once enough of the thyroid is destroyed, one will eventually go HYPO or could still possibly stay normal. It's tough to predict, because the antibodies only indicate that the thyroid was once under attack. Whether it is still under attack is debatable, but i suspect it is in me, since I am borderline HYPERthyroid, unless there is another mechanism causing my HYPERthyroidism. I do not have Graves disease.

I suggest you Google Ashwagandha and thyrotoxicosis, and then Ashwagandha and thyroid. Don't take my word for it, read it for yourself. It has been proven in lab tests with rats. There was also a woman in the Netherlands that had symptoms of hyperthyroidism when using Ashwagandha, and never had thyroid issues prior to using the Ashwagandha. Blood tests confirmed thyrotoxicosis. Her thyroid hormone values returned to normal after stopping the Ashwagandha. I also had the same experience. After about six weeks of Ashwagandha, my thryoid became extremely hyper. It was never that hyper before. Prior to this I was only mildly hyperthyroid. After stopping the Ashwagandha, it went away. Too coincidental since I had NOT changed anything else in terms of supplements or medication. My rule is always, one change at a time. There are also reports of people who are HYPOthyroid and have been able to reduce the amount of levothyroxine they are taking when using Ashwagandha. I'm sure this won't happen with everyone, but I guess I was one of the few where it did. Even if you still doubt it, keep it in the back of your mind. Eventually, if it is true, there will be more reports.

I'm trying to avoid stimulating adaptogens as I'm wired 24/7. Are licorice root and jiaogulan more "calming" than "stimulating"? I am also trying one at a time so I can assess the effects individually. Granted if Schisandra helps, I will then add the others you suggested one at a time, provided they are not excitatory.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post and respond. I sincerely appreciate it. If I have not clarified everything or if anything is still ambiguous, please let me know. Thanks again and take care.
