I would agree that there are financial considerations involved in the doctors' opinions in general, but in my case, my doctors are part of Kaiser-Permanente, which is a not-for-profit HMO. It would seem that they would have nothing to lose and everything to gain by having people avoid surgery if possible. I think part of their reluctance is just the sheer momentum of their approach--surgery is an established "wisdom" and you're an unscientific kook if you think that drinking some olive oil will solve the problem.
