Re: terrified - my baby diagnosed with hypothyroidism
I don't know if I will take you up on the Mass. offer, but I never say never.
I know everyone hopes I don't do the drugs, but we got the synthroid filled right away and have started him on it. For what it's worth, it's the 50 mcg dose, which has no colors! If anything weird happens to him, I'm stopping it. I don't want him to be on it for very long in any case.
I want to find a doc who will go with one of the dessicated thyroid drugs, maybe nature-throid. They've been in use for a lot longer than synthroid, from what I understand. Next blood test is about a week away. Yes, I feel railroaded into starting him on synthroid without having the lab results (except that abbreviated version of the first one). Our old NMD said she would take a look at them when she got them and give her opinion. Even though he's taking the synthroid now, I'm going to keep after this, keep getting opinions.
I like your idea about getting a broader panel of hormone measurements. It's gotta beat having just these two serum TSH and T4 measurements.
We have an appointment with the pediatric endocrinologist (and a research endocrinologist) tomorrow. I hear he, or someone, wants to get the
Iodine levels in my breast milk and in baby's urine tested. The thought of me collecting urine in a zip lock bag (as suggested by the pediatrician) cracks me up, though. Can't they just wring out one of the diapers?
