dog making sad sounds

Dear friends,

My little 14.5 yr old chihuahua is healthy, but he seems to be frustrated and unhappy about something.

He sleeps on a nice pile of soft blankets with a doggy heating pad at night. Ever since he has had that setup, he doesn't sleep in my bed anymore, I am bummed about that. :)

He loves to fix the blankets and do that little dig thing that dogs do, and gets growly if disturbed while resting.

The new thing is, at night he will make these little sad whines or frustrated sounds, sometimes even ending up with a few barks.

I pick him up to comfort him, but he just wants to jump back down to his bed, so it isn't anything wrong with his bed.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what is making him sad?

Maybe he is irritated with his cataracts and loss of sight?

I think maybe I will bring in a stool sample to see if he has giardia.

thanks for any opinions!
