Ulcerative colitis in an 11 year old
Hello,
I've not posted anything to this group before, so please bear with me.
My son was diagnosed three years ago as suffering from ulcerative colitis and is presently in the middle of a flare-up. Last year we had a few (three) flare-ups which were 'treated' with Prednisone. All the time he was on Asacol.
This present flare-up has caused a further endoscopy to be carried out this Friday and depending upon the results the recommendation will almost certainly be for Prednisone, Asacol and Azathioprine. I can't say this prospect thrills me at all!
Whilst attempting to understand just what's going on I stumbled across the essentially vegan fruit and vegetable option advocated by Dr.Klein in his book "Self Healing Colitis and Crohns".
Who has tried this with success, and perhaps more importantly, who has tried this successfully with a child? At eleven years of age deficiencies in essential nutrients can have detrimental effects of childhood development. I suppose this is what makes these alternative options difficult to "trial" with little "medical" support and the child's weight decreasing by the day.
Suggestions, hints, tips?
Many thanks,
nzchris.
