It's difficult for you,your son and your husband
As a boy I was never bullied,but I have physically fought bullies who tried
My mother,nor my father ever knew about them because I felt I had to take care of them myself,and I did,and once I faced them I was never bothered again

Sometimes there are moments of truth,the put up or shut up moments,and although they are difficult, (and sometimes dangerous)for your son (and all of us)they are important learning moments,of facing something you fear

The fact that your son told you about this threat leads me to believe that he doesn't really want to fight ,(Not that fighting is a great thing)but if he really feels there is no other way to get the bully off his back ,then a boy has got to do what a .....
Tell him how you feel - let him do what he has to do - he's a boy, but it is his life,and he has to learn how to deal with these kinds of people too
My father never raised a hand to me or anyone else as far as I know ,or never taught me how to fight
In the long term getting fit will help him,especially with confidence
I know its torturous for you,but such is life when you want to protect a loved one,and can't
