Mirena IUD - Nausea, Vomiting, Dizziness, Numbness
I got the Mirena IUD a little over 2 years ago when I was 20 years old. Immediately after having it inserted I got pretty bad cramps that came and went over the next 3 days or so. But then I felt great. I stopped having periods quickly, which I was super excited about because many birth controls I tried in the past made me bleed randomly/more than usual and/or gave me terrible cramps. But this excitement didn’t last long..
I started feeling nauseous all the time. I began throwing up regularly. I was throwing up between 2-7 times every single day. All the vomiting caused me to become severely underweight and I also started feeling dizzy quite often. I assumed the dizziness was due to me not eating as much because I was sooo nauseous. But all the throwing up was causing me to miss school and work so I started seeing doctors often to find out what was causing this. The doctors made sure I wasn’t pregnant, made sure my IUD was still in the correct position, and tested me for a few different conditions that all came back negative. Because the doctors couldn’t find a problem, they began prescribing me Ondansetron to simply prevent me from vomiting. I was taking the medicine as often as I could following the doctor’s orders and it was working. I was only throwing up maybe 3 times a week, started gaining weight back, and didn’t feel nauseous all the time anymore.. But this only lasted for a few weeks and then it was back to throwing up and more doctor visits. The doctors just wanted to keep giving me anti-nausea medication, but I told them I didn’t want to take anything else until they could find a cause to my symptoms. They never found out what was causing it. I started eating healthier (when I could eat), taking lots of vitamins, and using natural “
Antibiotics ”(like turmeric, garlic, coconut oil, lemon, ginger, etc etc). After about 6 months since the vomiting and nausea first began, it just stopped. At the time, I was so ecstatic my symptoms (other than the occasional dizziness) went away that I didn’t care why. I thought that my health problems were over, but they weren’t..
Weeks later, I was walking home from class and I was about a block away from my house when all of a sudden I felt numbness in my leg and just couldn’t walk any further. It was probably the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced. I just sat there on the curb, hoping it would go away. After awhile, the numbness faded enough for me to force myself to walk the rest of the way home, but it wasn’t easy. I never experienced numbness in my legs before, but after that first time it kept coming back, along with feeling weak and off balance. At first it was spaced out, it would happen randomly every few weeks, but then it got worse.. It was happening every single day. It got to the point where if I walked more than about a block, I could pretty much guarantee that the numbness would come back and I wouldn’t be able to walk any further for who knows how long. I’ve always been an active, independent person. For the previous 2 years, I lived in the university district and didn’t have a car because everything was within walking distance. So for me to all of a sudden start having numbness in my legs that prevented me from walking where I needed to go was soul-crushing. I began having insane anxiety anytime I had to walk anywhere. I started taking taxis everywhere and going to doctors every chance I got. I wanted this to end as soon as possible. I saw PCPs, neurologists, physical therapists, chiropractors, musculoskeletal doctors, and anyone else I was referred to. I had scans done of my feet, legs, and brain. They tested me for diabetes, anemia, MS, checked to see if I had a pinched nerve in my back, and more. Not one of those doctors or tests could give me a diagnosis. But one of my physical therapists and chiropractors determined that I lost some feeling/sensitivity in my left foot/ankle. Still, no one was able to offer anything that would help me. I skipped class, quit jobs, and stopped going out other than when I had to because of how bad the numbness was and how bad my anxiety and
Depression got because of it. I’ve dealt with this debilitating numbness for a year and a half before finding out that other people have had very similar experiences to me after getting a Mirena IUD.
The nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and numbness are not the only symptoms I’ve unexplainably developed since getting a Mirena IUD, although I consider them to be the worst and most debilitating. I also started getting severe headaches and really bad acne, which I hadn’t got either of since I was like 15. I’ve always had thick long hair and within months it started breaking off and became the thinnest I’ve ever seen it. I randomly got incredibly severe abdominal and pelvic pain that was so bad I ended up in Urgent Care 3 times and the ER twice for. After a year of no periods, I would randomly bleed and when this happened I experienced the absolute worst cramps I’ve ever had in my life. My anxiety and
Depression got so bad that I felt like I wasn’t even living anymore. I was fighting just to survive, just to get through each day, and I was tired of spending all my time with doctors that couldn’t help me. I’ve had a long list of unexplainable symptoms for 2 years after getting the Mirena IUD and haven’t been able to get even one diagnosis. I’ve randomly done research countless times throughout this struggle and have found multiple women who have had every single one of the symptoms I’ve experienced after getting a Mirena IUD. There have been many lawsuits due to health problems caused by Mirena. I’ve brought this up to doctors and they all have just brushed it off and/or told me those aren’t all side effects of the Mirena, which is why I left it in for so long. But I’m finally getting it taken out in 2 weeks and honestly it couldn’t be soon enough. I might not be able to prove that the Mirena has caused all of this, but I know my body. Women know their bodies. And I don’t think it’s just a coincidence that me and many other women who have spent the majority of their life with little to no health problems all of a sudden have multiple unexplainable symptoms after having a Mirena IUD inserted.
