Hi Rebecca
Thank you for your note in response and for being open about this. Many just not interested to listen.
Probiotics is essentiall lactic bacteria. If you do a search on the Net (for example with google) you will find many articles written about it. If done properly, it is not actually a supplement nor a food but a sort of in between.
This lactic bacteria is with us from the time we are born - our digestive system from the mouth to the anus is continuous with the atmosphere. Accordingly, all sorts of bacteria, virus, etc can get into our digestive system. Some are needed (good) but others are harmful (pathogenic). It is when the harmful bacteria outnumber the good bacteria that the digestive goes wrong and you suffer from all kinds of illnesses and allergies. For example a lot of bad bacteria break down bad food into nitrogen, ammonia and other toxic stuff in our digestive system which are not healthy. This imposes strain and stress on our other cleansing organs like the liver and kidneys. Other organisms like yeast (candida albican) if there is overgrowth, causes a lot of problems to women especially like thrush, etc.. They also attach themselves to the gut walls and become fungus like. Roots grow into the walls and puncture it causing proteins and other food material to leak into the blood stream. In reaction the blood sends the defensive cells to protect and this invariably causes an allergy. One of the reasons why those with excessive yeast infection often have severe allergies.
Coming back to lactic bacteria, they are in mother's milk and babies fed mother's milk often are stronger and healthier and less likely to be sick. Their immune system is much better.
I encourage you to go on the
healthy Diet as you have started but do remember that our body needs a variety of food - across the board. So sometimes restricting yourself to certain kinds of food may not get you all the nutrients the body needs. I would say that moderation is the best policy. Like myself, I would eat most things in moderation.
Finally, no matter what you eat, it will not work if your digestive system is not healthy and not absorbing the food you eat. The basic and most fundamental concern would be a healthy digestive system and then you can worry about what you eat. That means ensuring that it has friendly useful flora (bacteria). Furthermore, by having lots of friendly bacteria, they prevent bad or harmful bacteria from "setting up" thus always preventing problems. The key word is also "prevention". Like a lot of illnesses, prevention is vital as onset of some illnesses can often not be reversed - for example diabetes!
Take care and keep well
