It sounds like it has been rough for you. Also sounds very uncomfortable. I have a few questions for you: What other body signals do you have? Any heartburn/indgestion? When I read your post, the first thing that cme to mind was your diaphragm. Have you ever had a ny traumas to your ribs and or spine? How old are you? I would encourage you to look into craniosacral therapy. Some of the techniques they use aid in releasing any tension in the diaphragm. Also, I would look into a practitioner that uses a percussor. this is used for myofascial release. It sounds like the massage is onto something but there may be fascia deeper inside the spine that is the problem.

Your back pain is due to bad flexibility. You need to do what I do to gain flexibility, strengh and stamina. This guy is a capatalist to the max so watch out. I would start with Combat Stretching

Mike, I've read your message a couple of times to get my head around it. I am certainly not an expert but have suffered severe back pain in the past and I know it is miserable, particularly when it is disturbing your sleep as badly as this, and certainly when you can see no end to it.

My advice to you is this: do not give up trying to find the cause of this pain. There IS a definite reason for your symptoms, there HAS to be....someone will have come across your specific problem before....so you must persist with the doctors and specialists, try different ones for as long as necessary until one of them finds out/ knows what is the cause. Keep trying something new yourself...it will keep up your spirits, keep researching on the internet...get as much information as you can and avoid anything wacky or anyone giving a link which invloves paying for info.

When you get up in the night, after a while are you able to do any stretches to speed up the time it takes for your back to calm down? You say that massage is the thing that relieves it. Do you have a good massage gadget that you could use yourself? Is there an area in your back that is particularly sore when you have a massage? You can get referred pain in all sorts of places but in my own experience of back pain it's the what I call 'hot spots' that were the culprits of my own symptoms. Have you tried yoga? It stretches everything and helps relax your breathing...you say you can stretch but can you stretch in all directions? Are there any stretches that you do which are painful or difficult? Maybe the focus of the injury is further up your back than you realise and deep inside your back which is why your breathing is affected when you lie down?? there are so many muscles, tendons and nerves that are intertwined....your diaphragm or something near your lungs goes in to spasm possibly? Sounds as though the docs think it's a nerve problem...do they know why that would suddenly happen and cause you such severe symptoms? and only when you lie down? Would it be possible for them to do some kind of scan overnight in hospital when you fall asleep to observe where the changes occur? Is there a sleeping position which makes it even worse? If there is any other type of scan that you haven't had done yet then get it done. I'm no expert like I say...just trying to think of reasons.

Anyway, there is a treatment for this, there has to be because something is causing it... so keep trying new things and even if killing the nerve that you mentioned didn't work, find that person who knows what this is.

Well I can give you temporary relief. It worked for me but without strengthening my back --mine is not going away. I need to strengthen my back. I assume it is a few issues that make us this way.

Go to http://www.biocranial.com and find a practitioner. I use the Marmorstein guy in the picture there. He is good. But they don;t have to be good to be effective. They stretch the muscles in the neck and head and you get relief immediately. I was so tight that I was OUT OF IT for 24 hours after they did it.... too tired and loose to stay awake. The procedure takes 10 minutes and is worth the office visit.

I am tight and stiff. Maybe the acid thread above this is right. That is why we are stiff. But I still need to strengthen. And then do a liver CLEANSE!!

You might want to try an Osteopath which they are extremely good.

It seems that nobody in your area has the knownledge of resetting dislocated and / or pinched nerves. It is a shame as it is a half hour to one hour session to reset those nerves.

You mentioned massage which has helped you well, you could try a deep tissue massage therapist as it is obvious I cannot help you as you do not live near me.
