A close friend of mine recently had a couple of skin cancers taken off her leg.
She has always loved the sun and, of course, the Dr. who removed the dark spots told her to stop tanning. So, for two weeks, she has not gotten her normal sun rays.
The problem now is her entire body has begun to scale!
I told her to brush her skin---she had never heard of that before and couldn't believe that I do that everyday. Then I told her to soak in Epsom Salts . That's all I could think of to tell her, so if any of you have any better advice, let me know so I can pass it along to her.

MoreThis is a reply to # 418,697I too had alligator skin (for years and years), and I'm the total opposite of your friend; I never lay out in the sun. How I finally got rid of it - I started rubbing pure coconut oil (from the health food store) into my skin every night before bed, and when I woke up, I did the skin brushing, followed by a warm shower, followed by a cold one - that was the kicker. It revitalizes your skin and really stimulates your natural oils and brings blood to the surface, like the brushing does. Also, drink tons of water!
My skin went from alligator hide tough to baby butt smooth in about a week. Coconut oil is amazing for your skin!

MoreThis is a reply to # 418,698After reading your post, I went out and bought some organic coconut oil. I bought it primarily for skin care, but was delighted to discover it stays stable at higher heats. Now I can enjoy my one of my favorite Southern treats, fried sweet potatoes, without worrying about trans fats and unhealthy oils. But, back to the skin. I love the way my very dry legs and arms feel after a skin brushing, shower, coconut oil massage. Yesterday I rubbed some oil on my face. To my amazement clogged pores around my nose and on my forehead opened up and hard little lumps of dried matter popped out. I was worried about putting pure oil on my oily T zone, but it improved my skin in a matter of hours. From now on, coconut oil is going to play a huge part in my skin care routine, face and body. The fried swe'taters may have to wait.

This is a reply to # 418,717Wow - that's very cool about your face! It cleaned out your pores?? Coconut oil is completely amazing - it's like some well -guarded secret. Here's all I've learned about it so far:
Internal:
-It's the lowest calorie of any fat.
-It actually reduces cholesterol.
-It revs up your metabolism and actually helps you lose weight.
-Has parasite-killing properties!!!
-Plumps and hydrates skin without creating oiliness - you can eat a tsp or two, or use as salad dressing, or add to a smoothie.
-The more the oil smells and tastes like coconuts, the purer it is, and the better and stronger its properties. For instance, at my health food store, there was a jar of organic coconut oil for 9.95, and right next to it, the same size jar of pure virgin organic coconut oil, for 24.95! I bought the expensive one ;)
-Fantastic with pineapple as a pina colada smoothie!
External:
-Makes you gorgeous! Smooths wrinkles. Clears up cysts and dry skin. Fabulous in every way for your skin ;)
-Wonderful for hair - I can attest to this personally, too. Put some on your hair and wait about half an hour, then shampoo. Makes it soft and shiny.
-Great for scar healing. I've heard that stretch marks are greatly reduced by coconut oil, but am not sure if that's true.
-Supposed to be a great tanning oil, especially for raw foodists, who supposedly will not burn at all using coconut oil, just develop a healthy sun glow without burn or tan.
I'm definitely a fan of coconut oil! It does it all. I wonder what else it does...hmm.
Maybe I can get my jar of coconut oil to paint my dining room and do my laundry for me!

This is a reply to # 418,697I've read where dry skin is often more the result of an *inside job*, that the body is drying out from lack of healthy oil in the diet...rubbing the skin with oils and skin brushing would certainly help, I think, but I would suggest also taking some form of healthy oils as well.
Someone else can better guide you than me, but I know from past experience that taking 1-2 Tbs. a day of fish oil or some oil like Udo's made major positive changes in my own dry skin. You might want to approach the problem both from the inside as well as the outside.
And, for what it's worth, someone told me a week ago that Epsom Salts baths can be extremely drying on the skin (I have no idea if this is right or wrong; I'm just passing it along).

This is a reply to # 418,699I would highly recommend the pure coconut oil as well! A friend puts it in a spray bottle like you would buy at Dollar General and sprays it on her entire body then rubs it in. I thought that was a wonderful idea, quick and easy and you do not have to keep dipping your fingers in the oil and worry about the possibility of contaminating it. :)
Also, if your friend would like to treat it from the inside out, ingesting 4 tablespoons of coconut oil is absolutely wonderful for your health in every so many ways not just your skin--it is amazing. If she does buy some to eat, make sure it tastes like coconuts--that means it is pure. Another thing she could do is take one tablespoon of cod liver oil every day, I take emulsified orange flavored as I cannot do just the oil itself. I give a teaspoon a day to my little girl, she loves it. :)
I can however just eat the coconut oil by the spoonful, it almost isn't like drinking oil at all (and I have an aversion to oil so this is amazing!) and has a really nice flavor. I am getting ready to order a five gallon pail of virgin coconut oil, and this will be a five month supply at 4 tablespoons a day for my husband and I. This is where I have found to be the best place to buy it in bulk, http://www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com/mall/virgin_coconut_oil.asp but if you are wanting to buy smaller bottles http://www.coconutoil-online.com/ has the Coconut Supreme for cheaper. They actually get the India oil from the same place, I have had the Coconut Supreme and it tastes wonderful. :) www.tropicaltraditions.com also has pure coconut oil, and their site is more informative about the benefits of coconut oil than just about any other I have found. America's view of nutrition is not always the right one...study coconut oil a bit further before you toss it out as bad. It is in fact far superior to all of the oils that you mentioned. Read Bruce Fife's book, Eat Fat Look Thin, and The Miracle of Coconut Oil. Go to http://www.coconutoil-online.com/ http://tropicaltraditions.com and http://www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com/mall/virgin_coconut_oil.asp and read read read. America touted coconut oil as bad for you long ago when they wanted soybean oil to sell, but in fact the study was extremely flawed. They studied hydrogenated coconut oil, which any hydrogenated oil is bad for you and has trans fats. Read Jordan Rubin's book Patient Heal Thyself, see what he has to say about the benefits of coconut oil. Join the yahoo club coconutinfo.com, ask questions there and Bruce Fife may personally explain for you, if not other knowledgeable people will. Read all the wonderful things people have to say about coconut oil on that group. and also it is one of the oils that can tolerate high cooking temperatures too/without going rancid. i agree with what above posster said/ the problem is not in the oil but in the other trans fat version. ... like folks say soy margarine is good fo ryou , when really is is another trans fat case.
i use olive oil in place of butter/and have found it to be
fantastic. just a dabble moisurizes dry food/like potatoes etc just enough to help it blend the herbs i add for flavoring.
i have heard coconut oil tastes wonderful on rice etc.
you can make your own coconut milk btw/ fill blender half full with water. add chunks of fresh coconut to full (or shredded can be used also) blend. strain off pulp seet milk aside and repeat using the pulp a second time. add second mix to first after straining again . throw away pulp now or cook with it i fyou want. put milk in refridgerator. use up quickly . inpuddings etc as a milk substitute.
this is how they make virgin coconut oil btw/ the start of it, then they let it sit until oil rises to teh top like 30/36 hours
to ferment up and skim off th e top oil. 8)

There's a lot on this whole curezone.com site to digest (yes, yes - another food word popping out....)and this coconut oil thing.....amazing. Absolutely amazing.
This entire curezone.com site was a blessing to discover (not to mention the people) - can't wait to pass it on to a few people who will groove to it.

This is a reply to # 418,713Saturated fats protect your heart. Read Weston Price Foundation (non profit organisation, not funded by those with commercial interests). People on traditional diets high in saturated fats did not get heart disease. The first recorded heart attack was in the 1930s (or thereabouts). The guy who invented the ECG was laughed at. Hydrogenated vegetable oils cause heart disease.
I also agree on coconut oil.
