Okay, I don't want to beat a dead horse hear, I know this subject has been hashed through before. But it just occurred to me today as I was reading Hebrews (and I was have not been thinking about PDL at all lately) that THIS is one of the major reasons I feel a problem with the PDL. Although there is concern with scripture out of context and other issues, I can SEE that there are many good results and I ask myself, WHY? Why would entire churches get fired up over this basic info?
The main concepts it teaches are scripturally sound, such as we are created to worship God, we are created for fellowship, etc. They seem so basic and obvious that I find it hard to imagine why people get excited about "learning" them.
Here is the scripture I read this morning:
Hebrews 5
11We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. 12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Hebrews 6
1Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And God permitting, we will do so.
So (other qualms aside) although PDL would seem like a reasonable study for new believers or non-Christians, it puzzles me as to how this information would be meaningful to a 10, 20, 30+ year Christian! They should be beyond that! But maybe Rick Warren has realized that, sadly, many "mature" Christians in the churches these days do NOT understand these basic truths. His material educates them of these basic truths and that is what fires people up - understanding something they should have understood long ago!
