I thought it was my own ignorance that prevented me from imagining a natural method of collecting their pollen, but it seems not. This is as cruel, if not more so, than the slaughter of cows, chickens, etc.
I now feel as if I have physically killed bees myself, and I cannot help but be reminded of a book I read when I was at school, entitled The Wasp Factory.
"He said to picture the bees flying through a doorway that has been reduced in size. There are brushes along the side, which brush off the pollen when the bee returns to the hive. The pollen is collected below in sterile containers."
This concurs with the information I was able to find online; quotes such as:
"Bee Pollen is gathered from pollen laden bees by a special device placed at the entrance of the hive. The device is designed to brush the material from the bees' legs."
"At the hive, bee handlers place a special device near the entrance that brushes this precious material from the bee’s hind legs."
I have not, unfortunately, discovered any description that goes into great detail as to what this "device" is, and indeed, if it might be harmful to the bees in any way. I am wondering then, if the device is capable of stripping the pollen from the hind legs, then might it also be capable of stripping the hind legs themselves? I know from my own observation that bees tend to enter the hive at a fair pace, so I am concerned that even brushes (as innocent as they sound) may do some harm.
I think, given the uncertainty, that I shall stop consuming bee pollen, even though I believe intently in its beneficial properties. If even one bee in a thousand dies or is rendered legless in order for me to eat a little goodness, then that is one too many for me to cope with.
My thanks to you, Owen, and again to you, finallyfaith.
"unless one is willing and able to live radically different than the rest of modern society, and find balance with all facets of nature, worrying and making statements like ' I couldnt cope with the death of a Bee' seems to me ridiculous."
Of course, but you have no idea who I am so it is a little unfair to tar me with the same brush as your "average" man or woman in this "modern society" of yours. I eat only fruits, nuts, herbs and seeds; I only wear cotton, linen and hemp, and I refuse to tolerate any form of cruelty whatsoever - not due to feeling guilty I hasten to add, as one can only feel guilt after a done deed. For me there is no deed and thus no guilt. This is balance, no?
"Perhaps in the quest for physical/spiritual perfection we get a little too self-focused in the process to the point where we are afraid to experience things out of fear more so than out of love."
There is no fear in seeking to sustain life on all levels. Where is the "love" in shrugging your shoulders at even one bee's death? What is the difference between the life of a supposedly humble bee and the life of your son, daughter, nephew or niece?
As you said though, you are merely expressing your opinion. If there is any fault in this it is that you are expressing your opinion on a perception you have of "me" which is clearly false and confused.
"...you probably wouldnt be here in the first place, and wouldnt be striving towards a 'cure' on curezone."
Another assumption my friend. As far as I am aware I am suffering no illness or dis-ease, and perfection of the human state is what I seek, not silver bullets.
"One can only do their best and what they feel is right you may say, and I would agree."
This is my point exactly, and seems to render your fantastical scenarios of motorway carnage and air pollution irrelevant.
The "one bee" represents far more than one living, apparently insignificant creature...
"Funny, because I seem to recall not too long ago you posting a message in the moreless forum about your liver being potentially in too rough of shape to even absorb any minerals in his alkalizing drink! Yet you suffer no dis-ease, and only strive for perfection!"
"Potentially" is the operative word here; in actual fact, I proposed that I may be suffering from insufficient bile flow (gallbladder) which may have in turn explained why the calcium was having little effect... And it is clear from your words that you are voicing some kind of grudge against me and not merely expressing a differing opinion; your mention of Moreless must be a coincidence, hm?
You are also intent on being as demeaning as you possibly can. (Traits of the pitiful, perhaps...) And this, old bean, is something I shall no longer entertain.
Take care.
And these ruthless destroyers are the very ones who attack the innocents of this world for upholding some form of morality and conscience; launching envious, shameful assaults on those who exist on an alternate plane to themselves...
These are also the very same people who accuse "us" of feeling superior, when in actual fact it is nothing but their own shame and guilt (perhaps even on a subconscious level) that makes them feel inferior...
